Are hair extensions for me?

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Truth is….they’re for everyone!

More and more people have now started to move toward calling ‘weaves’ free flow hair extension method. The reasoning behind this is simply the fact that that method isn’t as bulky and visible as the traditional ‘weave’. Unfortunately, many people are unaware that weaves are actually in fact the safest method of hair extension installation on the market. A large percentage of hair restoration clientele suffer from male/female patterned hair loss, alopecia, trichotillomania, hormonal hair loss and have recently finished chemotherapy treatments. Because of this the percentage of our clients that have fine hair runs at 95%.

These days fine hair is no longer a rarity. To attach the curtain of human hair onto your own hair there must first have be buffer in between so we aren’t attaching anything directly onto your hair. This buffer is synthetic hair; this is used this to create the braid only pulling tiny pieces of your own hair into the braid. Now this is where it gets a little more scientific. Everyone’s parting is completely different, due to your head shape, patterns of hair loss and lifestyle, one can’t install your braids in the same way as the person before you. One thing that is a common denominator is that all the parting must be square! This means that all of the tension points are 100% equal, because the braids are in a rectangle formation. Unfortunately you cannot have 100% tension points with fusion or singles, unless you are measuring a square in between each bundle of hair installed, if so, this process would take days!

With fusions and singles you are using bonds, glues or adhesives! Upon removal, that’s when the most damage is done, as heat, removal solution or extreme pulling must be used to take these out. At this point you’re losing handfuls of hair each time you remove them, not to mention the fact that you are unable to reuse that hair, which isn’t exactly cost effective. With free flow extensions, we only use thread and synthetic hair, so upon removal you aren’t losing any extra hair as all we have to do is cut out the thread and take out the braid. Because of this, you are able to maintain your extensions for years at a time and still have your hair in excellent condition, not deteriorating. Unfortunately, these days ‘weaves’ get a bad rap, simply because they aren’t installed properly. When you are in the market for extensions, it’s important that you find a salon that specializes in extensions, as they will be in the practice of doing it everyday, constantly improving their method of attachment. Make sure they won’t be using any kind of glues or bonds to your hair as in the long term they will cause nothing but damage. Also, ask what kind of hair this salon will be using, is it raw Remi? Packaged hair? This will make a huge difference in the longevity of the hair as well as the quality.

Sulfates in my shampoo

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

There’s been a lot of recent buzz in the health and beauty world about sulfate free shampoo. But what does this really mean? Is this some kind of gluten free alternative, but for my hair? The fact is most shampoos contain one of the following sulfates in a single bottle.

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate or SLES
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium Myreth Sulfate
  • TEA Laureth Sulfate

In laymen’s terms, sulfates are used to make water more useful combined with your shampoo, in turn allowing it to lather and clean your hair and scalp. Perfect right? Initially maybe, but often consumers wash their hair with these kinds of shampoos everyday. At first you will find that your hair is soft and considerably clean, but overtime you will find your hair dry, scalp oily and colour stripped (if you do colour). Washing your hair each day is a vicious cycle as sulfates work to remove all oil, causing your scalp to produce often double for what it has lost.
Sulfate free shampoos don’t lather like their parent shampoos, but they do keep some your scalps natural oils, maintain your colour and moisturize your hair.

There are many brands out there so it is important you do your research and see what pH balance would combine best with your scalp.Try limiting your shampoo usage so that you may test yourself to see how it affects your moisture/oil levels.

We currently carry the best selling one on the market from the Coloure line:

Non Surgical hairloss solutions

Friday, July 13th, 2012

Millions of people suffer from over a dozen different kinds of hairloss worldwide. As hair is extremely important, it is not uncommon that we would want to seek out methods that could restore what we once had,  or never had to begin with. Here are all the common causes of hairloss and the solutions available at your disposal that are non-surgical.

Alopecia

The condition where hair is lost on some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Called spot baldness due to bald patches in the first stages, 1-2% of cases can spread to entire scalp; Alopecia totalis. 50% of patients’ hair will regrow in roughly a year without any treatment. While we cannot provide any medical treatment, we can offer hair replacement until the hair fully grows back or until medical treatment is complete.

Hair Replacement Solutions: Depending on the extent and positioning of hair loss on the scalp clients may opt for either a hairpiece (small, medium or large) and/or hair extension package to add fullness to areas where the hair is thinning. We can work around the patches to attach hair to ensure that patches are not visible. We can also create a piece to cover a patch of any size, whether it be large or small. As we cannot attest for all of our alopecia clients, some do find that their hair has grown underneath the hair piece and/or extensions due to less visibility and stress.

Female Pattern Baldness

This form of hair loss is usually limited to the front, sides, or crown area of the scalp. Unlike male pattern baldness, hair tends to thin rather than fall out completely. At least 40% of North American women will experience hairloss by the time they are 40 years old.

Male Pattern Baldness:

The onset of this condition can begin anywhere between the ages of 20 to 45. Hair loss develops in a series of stages as in the crown area, the front area or a combination of both.

Hair Replacement Solutions: Depending on the extent and positioning of hair loss on the scalp clients may opt for either a hairpiece or hair extension package to add fullness to areas where the hair is thinning. Hairpieces can either be ordered in or be customed created to fit the client’s head shape very comfortably. Traditionally, hairpieces get a bad reputation for looking like a “mop top” or being uncomfortable. Hairpieces have very much advanced over the years as now and are incredibly realistic looking. This is due to the fact that most human hairpieces are monotops or hand-tied, meaning that they look as if they have a scalp line, can be parted any which way and can also be attached semi-permanently or with clips. With semi-permanent attachment the wearer may sleep in the hairpiece, shower and will only have to have it maintained roughly every 2 months. The life of the hairpiece itself (with proper care) can range up to a year and over. Even at that point it’s not that the piece is too damaged to wear, but the wearer will notice some thinning in the part, which can be restored.

Trichotillomania

“Trich” as it is commonly known, is an impulse control disorder characterized by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, facial hair, nose hair, eyebrows or other body hair, often resulting in noticeable bald patches.

Hair Replacement Solutions: Similar to alopecia and pattern baldness, depending on the extent and positioning of hair loss on the scalp clients may opt for either a hairpiece and/or hair extension package to add fullness to areas where the hair is thinning. We can work around the patches to attach hair to ensure that patches are not visible. We can also create a piece to cover a patch of any size, whether it be large or small. As we cannot guarantee that this replacement will stop the compulsion, we can offer temporary or permanent replacement until treatment is complete.

Alopecia Totalis

Is the loss of all head hair. Its causes are unclear, but it is currently believed to be an autoimmune disorder. The hair generally does not grow back.

Hypotrichosis

A condition in which there is no hair growth. Unlike alopecia, which describes hair loss where formerly there was hair growth, hypotrichosis describes a situation where there was no hair growth in the first place.

Cancer Related Hair Loss (Chemotherapy)

For most patients undergoing chemotherapy hair will begin to fall out within 10 to 21 days after treatment begins. As this sudden loss of hair can be quite a shock to many patients, time and care should be taken to select a wig based solution that looks natural, is comfortable, and easy to style. Synthetic wigs are an excellent solution for those who prefer to not have to style their hair daily and/or are looking for a transition into human hair wigs. Human hair wigs can be custom made to fit the size of your head exactly or can be ordered in stock.

Hair technology has graced us with silicone wig caps. These caps are formulate to suction to your head so that you may shower, swim, sleep and play high impact sports with a wig on without fear that it will fall off. Silicone wig caps can be individually hand-tied with human hair and with the wearer’s specified length, colour and style. The caps are extremely lightweight and breathable – perfect to wear all times of the year. Overtime, the base itself stretches a very minimal amount.

We offer free consultations for any type of hairloss and have custom packages that correspond to your lifestyle and needs.

The truth about Remi Virgin hair

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

It is extremely important to ask this question when you are shopping for hair extensions because, unlike the workmanship of attachment which is hidden, the hair is really what you are presenting to the world, so it has to be of excellent quality!  All the hair sold at Mohair Salon is Remi Hair acquired from suppliers around the world.  Remi hair is a breakthrough process in harvesting and manufacturing of human hair used in the wig and hairpiece world.  Remi hair uses only the finest and most beautiful human hair, which is cut from the head and specially tagged “Root End First”.  Throughout the entire manufacturing process, the hair is kept root end first, eliminating common problems such as matting, dullness, and weaker hair shafts.  The human hair used in manufacturing other than Remi hair is not handled root end first, causing the cuticle of the hair shaft to become tangled.  To compensate for this, the hair receives an acid bath, which almost completely strips the hair shaft of cuticle, leaving it much weaker, and easily broken.

Buyer Beware!

Not all hair that is sold as Remi and Virgin actually is, so be careful!  Unfortunately, because most hair extensions are coated with silicone during processing, it is extremely difficult to tell just by sight and feel whether a certain grade is Remi or not.  Usually, upon washing, Remi grades are tangle free.  Virgin hair is usually only sold in ‘ponytails’, by the ounce, and is never bagged or pre-wefted (sewn into a curtain).  It also does not have a uniform look and feel to it.  By its very nature, its colour and texture will not appear to be man/machine made.  Virgin hair is available at Mohair Salon because we have the means to sort, custom blend and weft it here for you.  Of course, if something seems too good to be true…it probably is.  ‘Virgin’ hair being sold at extreme lengths, and at unusually low prices is probably not virgin at all.

At Mohair Salon, we carry four grades of hair under the description of Remi Hair. These are as follows:

Remi Virgin Indian – Available in 10” – 32”, this is finer than the Remi Virgin Malaysian hair.  It is available in wavy to curly, and stays incredibly soft wash after wash.

Remi Processed European – Available in 18” – 30”, this is Virgin Indian or Malaysian hair that has been processed to feel like European Virgin hair.  This grade has the closest feel and texture to our Russian hair.  The standard grade is bone-straight, but it is also available in a beautiful curl.

Remi Virgin or One-Stepped Processed Russian – Available in 10” – 28” (longer lengths are in limited quantities), this is the finest hair that we carry.  It is available in several textures and colours ranging from black, brown, dark blonde to very light blonde…if you are lucky!!!  Because blondes are extremely rare, we often have a wait list for naturally lighter shades.
